The Joker, Swatting, and Star Wars Toxicity

We start this podcast off with a quick update from the California Primary with a promise to cover the results in the next episode. We discuss the upcoming stand-alone Joker movie with Jared Leto. We express some doubts about whether Joker can carry a stand-alone movie and what centering a villain does to the franchise. Diz breaks down some of Jared Leto’s problematic past and Ali digs deeper in the analysis of Joker and psychopathy. This leads us to discussing some of the more toxic elements of the nerd and game world with swatting. David Hogg’s house was raided by SWAT teams. We call out the deep insecurity and cowardice that leads someone to send a SWAT team against someone else just cause they share a different opinion. This conversation about toxic nerd culture and how it has become mainstreamed into a political party leads us to the conversation about Kelly Marie Tran and the harassment she’s faced from Star Wars fans. We note that while we aren’t fans of the film’s direction that Rose was a great addition and how the harassers all attacked her for her race and gender. We pay special attention to the role of technology in this conversation. We dissect this culture and hope that nerds can be better.
