Remakes, Fandoms, and Furries

The episode starts with a crazy story from Diz about his strange late night encounters. Our nerd news of the week discusses Ron Howard joining the Han Solo movie and the Jumanji remake. This leads us to talking about remakes and Hollywood before diving into fandoms. We talk about the history of fandoms, their social function, and how they are perceived. Whether we are talking Potterheads, Trekkies, Whovians, or any of the other myriad of fandoms, they have an impact on people’s lives and on society. Whether they are viewed as the result of social awkwardness and obsession, or a product of identity formation, fandoms have a huge role to play. We also discuss the role of capitalism in exploiting fandoms. We end with a Tumblr ethnography from Vy on furries.
